Copple Chevrolet GMC is at 306 Main Street in Louisville, Nebraska. It’s a family-owned dealership that has been there for more than 50 years, and it sits between Omaha and Lincoln, two markets full of dealers with far bigger lots and far bigger ad budgets.

We manage Copple’s advertising. The first decision we had to make was whether to act like one of those metro stores or act like what Copple is. We picked the second, and most of what we do for them follows from it.

You can’t win the big dealer’s game

Big market dealer advertising is built on volume. The loudest price wins, the biggest inventory count wins, and the weekend sale is always the biggest one of the year. That works when you have hundreds of units on the ground and a budget to shout over everyone else in town.

A small town dealership that copies it loses twice. It can’t match the inventory or the spend, so it comes off as a smaller version of the store up the highway. And it throws away the one thing the metro store can’t buy, which is that people in town know who owns the place.

It also sounds wrong. A screaming sale ad from a dealership on Main Street, in a town where the owner’s family has sold trucks for half a century, doesn’t sound like them. People who have bought there before notice.

Taking care of locals is the strategy

A big market store can afford to treat a sale as a one-time event. There are always more buyers. A small town dealer can’t, because the buyer is also a neighbor. They’ll be back for an oil change. Their kid will need a first car. They’ll tell everyone at the ball game how it went.

So a dealership like Copple doesn’t try to make every dollar on every deal. It leaves a little on the table, the customer comes back, and so do the people that customer talks to. Copple’s own site puts it this way: “If you’ve had problems with other dealerships, come to Copple and let us take care of you.”

Our job is to put that mentality into the advertising instead of covering it up with sale graphics. In practice that means:

  • We advertise the dealership as much as the deal. Incentives come and go every month. The reasons to buy from Copple don’t.
  • We make ads that look like they come from Nebraska. Fields, grain bins and a windmill are a better backdrop for Copple than a stock photo of a glass showroom.
  • We don’t promise what the store can’t back up. In a town this size an ad that stretches the truth gets found out quickly.
  • We write for the locals first. People in Omaha and Lincoln are welcome, and some of them make the drive because they want to be treated the way the locals are.

Why buy from Copple?

A “why buy” is the piece that answers the question every shopper is asking and most dealer ads skip: why this dealership and not the one twenty minutes away? Here is the one we built for Copple.

There is no price on it, no payment and no expiration date. That’s deliberate. Everything on it is something a bigger dealer would have a hard time saying.

What it saysWhy it’s there

Chevrolet and GMC in one locationIt’s a practical reason to make the drive: you can shop both brands in one stop.
Confident buying: honest, transparent pricing with no hidden fees, gimmicks or surprisesThis is the “not trying to make every dollar” mentality, written as a promise.
Confident driving: inspected and reconditioned vehicles, backed by a certified service team after the saleIt tells the buyer the relationship keeps going after they sign.

The tagline, “Confident buying. Confident driving.”, covers both halves of that: how you’re treated on the day, and how you’re treated afterward.

A why buy also lasts. A sale ad is finished at the end of the month. This one can run on the website, on social, in the showroom and behind every offer we put out for as long as it stays true.

Advertise what’s already true

We didn’t have to invent a position for Copple. The family had spent 50 years earning one. We just had to stop the advertising from hiding it.

If you run a small town dealership and your ads look like they could belong to any store in any city, talk to Bypass. You probably already have your why buy. It may only need writing down.
